Germany Says Ukraine's 2027 EU Entry “Out of the Question”

(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has definitively rejected 2027 as a feasible timeline for Ukraine's integration into the European Union, declaring the accelerated accession impossible.

Merz disclosed at a Berlin press conference Wednesday that German officials informed American counterparts that "Ukraine's accession on January 1, 2027, is out of the question. It is not possible. All members—including Ukraine—who wish to join the European Union at a later date must meet the Copenhagen criteria."

The Copenhagen criteria, codified in 1993, outline fundamental political, economic, and regulatory requirements prospective member states must satisfy for EU admission. These standards mandate stable democratic governance, competitive market economies, and capability to integrate the union's comprehensive legal framework.

"The processes usually take several years. Ukraine must have the prospect of becoming a member of the European Union, but this is a long-term process," Merz emphasized.

The Chancellor stressed Ukraine's immediate focus should center on ongoing trilateral negotiations with American and Russian representatives in Abu Dhabi, while expressing measured hope regarding a potential settlement.

Russian and Ukrainian delegations conducted peace talks Friday through Saturday exploring potential resolution frameworks with US intermediation.

Ukraine submitted its membership application shortly after hostilities with Russia erupted in 2022, subsequently advocating for expedited admission as a defensive strategy.

"Ukraine's accession to the European Union is one of the key security guarantees not only for us, but also for all of Europe," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on social platform X, operated by the American technology company, following recent discussions with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker.

"That is why we are speaking about a concrete date – 2027 – and we count on partners' support for our position," he added.
